Twitris supporting Micromappers for UN OCHA

For Yolanda (Haiyen) Typhoon response, Twitris ( NSF SoCS project) team is supporting MicroMappers platform launched in collaboration with Dr. Patrick Meier at QCRI and StandBy Task Force for data collection and automated filtering support to provide to inputs of Clicker apps for volunteers to find nuggets from social media, and therefore, support humanitarian relief efforts by UN OCHA.

- Quick description of the purpose of each widget on Twitris: (The pipeline of automatic analyses runs every two hours)
* The Popular Topics widget shows trending topical tags extracted from the massive tweets, to give quick summary of what is trending.
* The Browse by Location widget shows trending topical tags extracted on the map with spatial and temporal dimensions, to give quick summary of what is trending at a location at certain point of time.
* The Search widget shows a search box for a user to find information, likewise on Google/Bing Search, but here we provide search on the relevant tweets and news/blogs and Wikipedia. It also shows trending Twitter hashtags and active Twitter users.
* The Network Analysis widget shows top influential users corresponding to topical discussion communities on Twitter. For example, who are the most influential people while discussing about volunteer assistance. It provides a way to engage with the target audience.
* The Real-time widget shows the incoming Twitter stream in real-time on the map, while also show color for what is the type of the tweet, for example, Green color to refer to money donations related data.
* The Insights widget shows helpful snapshots of the analysis, that add value to viewer's understanding of the event processing.

The following networks shows influential users connectivity on Social Media talking about specific needs, such as food, shelter, etc. You can either click on a node in the network to see user profile on Twitter OR you can browse through them by their profession types in the left column-- such as HUMANITARIAN or MEDICAL, etc. Clicking on a need-type opens list of profession categories, clicking on a user under profession category list will show its information on the right side along with its important tweets contributing to its influence.

Engage from one interface with influencers to:
1.) Verify information of specific types, for example, remotely sitting humanitarians are more suitable in checking specific information, compared to an influential user of other type.
2.) Channelize important situational awareness messages effectively in the entire network of Twitter, such as correcting rumors, etc.
3.) Ask them to find further more specific need related messages (e.g., medical) by looking at their profession types, such as humanitarian, medical, journalism, etc.

What is Twitris+?

A Semantic Social Web application with real-time monitoring and multi-faceted analysis of social signals to provide insights and a framework for situational awareness, in-depth event analysis and coordination, emergency response aid, reputation management etc.

Why Twitris+?

Users are sharing voluminous social data (800M+ active Facebook users, 1B+ tweets/week) through social networking platforms accessible by Web and increasingly via mobile devices. This gives unprecedented opportunity to decision makers-- from corporate analysts to coordinators during emergencies, to answer questions or take actions related to a broad variety of activities and situations: who should they really engage with, how to prioritize posts for actions in the voluminous data stream, what are the needs and who are the resource providers in emergency event, how is corporate brand performing, and does the customer support adequately serve the needs while managing corporate reputation etc. We demonstrate these capabilities using Twitris+.
